The Ingenium 2018 Blog: Overture Week - Day 5

21 July 2018

It’s day 5 of Ingenium Academy 2018 and we are busy preparing for our performances in Oxford at the end of the week. The students have been working so hard and we are so very excited to be able to showcase some of what they have been working on during the concert at the prestigious Holywell Music Room.

If it’s Friday that means that its a Friday Fitness morning! Charles and David got us moving to some amazing tunes, starting the day with star jumps, planks and stretches. By the end of the fantastic warm up all of the children felt energised and ready to tackle the day.

Today we were joined by Matt and Emma Denton from the Carducci Quartet and our chamber musicians had the opportunity to receive individual violin and cello lessons as well as coaching in their chamber groups. Having been in a quartet together since they were fifteen years old, both Matt and Emma brought a wealth of experience to the sessions.

The composers had a very productive and interesting day looking at graphic scores and finding out more about how different composers create them.

Our young pianists were busy in their individual lessons and coaching sessions getting ready for the concert on Saturday.

In the afternoon Matt and Emma together with Simon Callaghan – our Head of Piano – performed a piano trio concert for the whole school. This concert was really special and inspiring for not only the students on the chamber music and piano programmes but also to the students on the composition and conducting programme in that it was a real treat, showcasing the highest quality of chamber music. After the concert, our students had the chance to ask questions about life as a professional musician, training and education, how the Carducci Quartet was formed and how best to work with other musicians.

Every Friday we have a Barbeque outside on the playing field, this week the weather was lovely and so we continued our evening outside with some team games and many of the students were even participating in the very English game of Cricket.
